Stop trying and start changing! Why living a healthy lifestyle matters

Weight loss can be frustrating, especially when you can’t find what will really work for you. It all starts with looking for diets to try versus what to change about your current diet; exercise programs to try versus changing your workout routine to something you enjoy; the list can go on. But why keep trying to find something that only works “enough”? The key to optimizing not only your weight loss journey, but your life, is to stop trying and start changing.

Trying FAD diets only work (but not really) for a short period of time. Dieting leads to temporary results, and then you end up trying something else hoping it will finally work. But at what point do you stop trying different diets or trends that may or may not promote your success? Wouldn’t you rather have lifelong results? Changing your lifestyle is something that you put thought into. It can be as simple as drinking water right when you wake up in the morning instead of reaching for caffeine.

  • Participating in exercise that will get you to your desired level of fitness
  • Making time during the day or week to focus on yourself through meditation, exercise, journaling, cooking, etc.
  • Going to bed and waking up at the same time everyday instead of feeling exhausted due to lack of sleep
  • Quit smoking now instead of saying that you will someday
  • Practicing healthy and productive habits instead of giving into procrastination

            A healthy lifestyle includes acknowledging which aspects of your life are no longer

promoting your success and modifying or limiting those factor(s) so you can achieve your goals! Even small changes such as switching from working out in the evenings to working out in the mornings can make a huge difference in your lifestyle! Changing your lifestyle benefits you because you don’t have anything to lose, you instead gain a happy and healthy life!

So how can you change your lifestyle?

            It is important to be realistic about which lifestyle changes you are making. If you are someone who hates running, and has tried multiple times throughout your life to enjoy it, then maybe becoming a runner isn’t the lifestyle change for you. If you are wanting to increase your cardiovascular fitness, then activities such as hiking, biking, or group exercise/online classes could be the place to start, potentially having more benefits for you than running! The process for forming positive lifestyle habits includes:


  • Identifying which aspects of your life you want to change
  • Writing down steps on how you can accomplish those goals
  • Organizing your list, putting your biggest priorities at the top
  • Breaking down each goal into smaller goals that will make it easy for you to accomplish them
  • Working from the top of your list, accomplishing each goal, and then moving onto the next

            Creating a list and organizing your goals can ensure that you don’t make too many changes at once. If you focus on multiple goals instead of just one goal, you may burn yourself out and prevent yourself from making those changes in the future.
