How is Weight Loss Related to COVID-19? Decrease Obesity, Increase Immunity

 The year 2020 put a spotlight on the importance of being healthy. For most, being healthy or living a healthy lifestyle means to eat fruits and vegetables and exercise, but there is a lot more to it. While one may practice a healthy lifestyle, it is important to focus on overall health. While you can reduce your exposure to COVID-19, there are other things that are in your control that can boost your immune system and promote a quicker recovery.*

Now more than ever, it is important to be within healthy weight guidelines, while bettering other health issues, to lower your risk for chronic diseases in association with COVID-19.

Obesity itself is an epidemic that can lead to chronic disease and can increase duration of health issues when not treated. In relation to COVID-19, obesity can prolong recovery and can lead to unfavorable outcomes due to increased inflammation and a weakened immune system. Respiratory issues, being one of the symptoms of COVID-19, tend to worsen when  obese, leading to possible mechanical ventilation treatment and risk of mortality. The excess adipose tissue that is in the body when you are overweight or obese becomes vulnerable to the virus, causing the body to take a longer time to recover and can cause one to become a critical patient. By preventing obesity, you can decrease your risk for COVID-19, as well as decreasing the risk of developing other chronic issues such as cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes, high blood pressure and hypertension.
